About the Autograph King

Oregon’s very own Shamim Dana, a man born with physical and mental disabilities, has built a remarkable life with the support of parents who gave him the tools to thrive.

His love of autographs started as a boy at Disneyland, collecting signatures from Mickey and other characters. As a huge "Wizard of Oz" fan, his first personal autograph came from Mickey Carroll, one of the last surviving Munchkin actors. From there, his collection grew to include movie stars, sports legends, and TV icons — over five thousand autographs, each with a story he still remembers.

Partially paralyzed on his left side with impaired sight and coordination, Shamim has still played school sports and won gold at the Special Olympics. Partially deaf, he plays multiple instruments and even performed onstage with the Beach Boys, later getting them to sign his "Endless Summer" album. He's just as thrilled getting a Beatles tribute band's autograph as a legend's.

At a Giants game, he valued the peanut vendor's autograph as much as pitcher Barry Zito's — for Shamim, it's always about the connection, not the fame.
